FURMAN UNIVERSITY CYCLING TEAM ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!

Chris Butler Winning the Road Race!

Yes it's true.....we WON!!!
The weekend started off with the team time trial on Friday. After a course evaluation on Thursday, we decided that we needed bigger gears because we would be going so fast!!! A special special thanks to the McClure family for driving 2 HOURS just to get us bigger gears. It really helped us beat the competition by even more. The day of the race EVERYONE was nervous but we all felt really strong. We blasted through the time trial with the fastest Division II time of 24.08.32 which was the 4th fastest time of the entire day.

The next day was the Road Race and at the start of the race it was snowing, but luckily the weather turned nice shortly after. Here is Chris Butler's report from the road race. He is the new Collegiate Road Race National Champion.

Spencer, Craig, Todd, and I lined up representing Furman along with about 80 other riders from across the country for Saturday’s Collegiate Division 2 Road Race Championships. There was a 1 mile climb very soon into the race followed by a fast descent and a couple of shorter climbs in crosswinds before we hit the circuit laps which we did four times. Spencer and I made the front selection of 35 riders up the introductory climbs of the race. The circuits were somewhat uneventful for me as I sat in for the majority of the race while Spencer made sure no serious threats got off the front of the peloton. With about 8 miles to go, Ben Showman from Army, was off the front in a solo move that had 1:30 on the our group, as Zach Grabowski(Colorado School of Mines), Craig Leugens(Yale), and I got off the front on one of the small climbs to form a chase group. Running out of time to pull back Showman, I attacked the two others in my chase group on the next rolling hill. I pulled back a little over 1 minute of Showman’s advantage over the next 4 miles, hoping I could close the rest of the time on the day’s final steep 1 kilometer climb. I passed him pretty early on in the ascent, but kept the tempo high as I knew I need a pretty big cushion for both the descent and the finishing stretch which were in a strong headwind. Meanwhile, Showman regrouped with Grabowski and Leugens, and began to chase me down. With 1 mile to go, Leugens(Yale) tried to bridge across to me, and ended up closing to within 4 seconds. I saw him coming from behind and put out as much power as my legs had left and got as aero as I could in the strong headwind to hold him off for the close win. Spencer came in the next group, finishing 11th and Craig Mckinney coming in later for 35th and Todd McClure for 68th. Overall, Furman executed the day’s plan to perfection as Spencer unselfishly worked hard all day and I did my best to follow through on my part.Chris Butler catching and then blowing past Showmann (Army)

Chris Butler taking nationals by storm

The next day was the criterium, a short technical course with lots of turns and sprinting. Almost immediately in the race, a group of riders got off the front of the rest of the pack. In this group of 10 people Furman had 2 riders in it, Chris Butler and Spencer Beamer. Here is Spencer's report from the criterium.

The race started off quite fast and almost immediately had a break establish off the front. Luckily Chris and I both made the break. Chris then worked hard on the front of the break to get us over a minute ahead over the field. With about 10 laps to go the attacks started coming from our group and after one particular attack, I attacked and got a descent gap on the group. Chris Butler did an amazing job covering anybody trying to catch me throughout this time and was a large part of the team's successthat day. I was riding solo off the front of the Collegiate National Criterium up until 3 laps to go when a rider from Yale bridged up to me. We worked together a little and were coming up to the sprint, Yale leading me out. In the sprint for the win, I started to come around him and was about to leave him in the dust, when my cleat pulled out of my pedal. Because of this I had to stop pedaling and clip back in, and even though I did this as quick as possible, by the time I had done this, we had crossed the line for second place. This was a real heartbreaker because I knew I had the win but things like this happen once in a while and there isn't really anything you can really do to prevent it. Even though I didn't get first, it was still a VERY good weekend with 2 national titles and a 2nd place.

The Team with the Gold!

We would like to give a special thanks again to the Beamer and McClure family for all of their help because without them this entire trip wouldn't have been possible. We would also like to recognize and thank our Director Sportif Glenn Thrift for all of his help throughout the season. A HUGE thanks to all of our sponsors this year for helping us achieve our goals and dreams: Fairway of Subaru, Greenville SC., West Coast Tomatoes, Hincapie Sportswear, Sunshine Cycles, and Specialized Bicycles

Preparing for Collegiate Nationals

Ok so a whole lot has gone on since the Auburn Race Weekend. I feel like time flies so fast and it takes a well oiled mind to be able to keep up with this blog.

We raced very well at the SEC Conference Championships a few weeks ago in Banner Elk, NC. This event was hosted by Lees- Mcrae, but dominated by Furman Cycling.

Team Time Trial (Spencer, Chris, Craig, Kit)- 2nd place

Men's A Road Race
----Chris Butler--1st place!
----Spencer Beamer--4th place!
----Craig Mckinney --13th place!
----Todd McClure--15th place!

All of our A riders scored points in this race of attrition. Many riders dropped by the way-side each lap as they had to face 1500 feet of climbing every 10 miles. It was intense, and when I woke up the next day I discovered muscles that I never knew that I had.

Men's B Road Race

Kit Hunter--6th place!

With 15 miles to go, Kit attacked on the flatter section of the course, dropped the 3 other scrubs that were with him, and rode the entire 4th and final lap in sweaty solitude. He put his Time Trialing skills to the test and was able to stay clear of any other riders coming from behind and finished in 6th place!  Way to go Kittles!

Our next race on the schedule will be the last one of the collegiate racing season. We are heading to Ft. Collins on Wednesday May 7th, 2008 for USA CYCLING Collegiate National Championships.  We will arrive in Colorado with high hopes of high finishes in the final standings. Our Team Time Trial squad is feeling stronger than ever, and with the 2 spankin' new disc wheels that our sponsors bought us, all of our riders will be more aerodynamic than that new thin Mac laptop that fits in the manilla envelope...you know the one!

With thousands and thousands of feet of climbing over the road race course, our climbing extraordinaire Christopher Butler is hoping to spin his legs, and scramble the eggs, of the competition. They're gonna be tore up from the floor up...no doubt.

And both the McClure parents and Beamer parents will be on-site to help with muscle rubdowns, bike repairs, powergel IV infusions, victory dances, and lots of cheering and hoopin' and hollerin'.  So that's nice too.

Stay tuned for a final update from our race in Colorado

UGA RACE WEEKEND, ATHENS, G.A.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet, cuz we are hungry and headed downtown.

ITT-Men's A

Spencer got 2nd place

Chris got 3rd place

Todd did well (12TH)
ALL OF US WERE IN THE POINTS BABY!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

RR-Men's A

Chris WON! He was in the initial break that went off and never got caught, and in the last big hill he pulled away solo and hammered it in the last 3 miles with a massive crosswind and his eyes rolled in the back of his head. When he went on that break, I knew he would stay in it and do great, and he sure did!

Spencer Top 10-probably 7th.-Spencer started a 2nd break group and a few others came on with him. He dropped them slowly and surely and broke away on the final roller and came in solo for probably 7th place. He passed a few guys who were dropped from Chris's break of 8, and came over the line in probably 7th.

Todd-Top 20 in a pull away win thingee from the main group. It was nice.
So we all got points, and got lots of points, in fact. We are going to that veggie place from last year, and this time its paid for by Dr. Scott McClure DDS...thanks pop. (who will never read this)

FIRST HAND RIDER ACCOUNTS
WRITTEN BY CHRIS BUTLER

After the Saturday morning time trial (SPENCER, TODD AND I PLACED 2ND, 12TH AND 3RD, RESPECTIVELY) we grabbed a quick bite to eat at a little sandwhich shop in downtown Athens. Spencer, Todd and I were representing Furman in the Men's A road race which was scheduled to be on the time trial course, consisting of 6 laps totaling 66 miles. With a last minute correction, the road race was shortened to just 5 laps (55 miles), who knows why!

After a couple of laps and going over a pretty steep roller several times the field was wearing down. Todd did well to hold onto the fast pace, while guys were falling off the back. Spencer and I were taking turns covering breaks, and finally I got in one that stuck. There were seven other riders in the break, 2 UF, 2 LMC, 1 UGA, 1 Clemson, and 1 Cumberland rider. Most of the teams in the peloton were represented, so the field was content with us rolling away.

With such a large break, there was no way I could beat all of them in a downhill sprint. So during the last lap with 7 miles to go I attacked on a pretty steep but short hill. Three of the riders were dropped from the break, and I was off the front, so four guys were trying to chase me down. I was feeling good that day, so I put down a hard effort and stayed away for the solo victory. Spencer and Todd also did well, and gave Furman a strong showing!

SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! at Georgia Tech

WRITTEN BY CHRIS BUTLER...

Saturday night Spencer, Craig, and I were heading into Newnan, Ga for the 2nd Georgia Tech. RR on Sunday, since we raced in Greenville on Saturday. After carbo loading at the Golden Corral, and trying to get a decent amount of sleep on the eve of daylight savings, Todd, Sean, Spencer, Craig, and I woke up to sub freezing temperatures. Sunday's RR for men's A was 6 laps totaling 66 miles of racing. Lees McCrae was skippping this race weekend so the only big teams there were Clemson and Florida.

Spencer was heavily marked by both teams which allowed me to sneak off in a break with 1 Clemson rider and 1 Florida rider on the first lap. The peloton let us float away, and our three man break rode the bulk of the race in cooperation, with each man doing his fair share of work. I would soon ruin this unison, as I knew I wanted to break things up on the small rollers and try to avoid a sprint and shoot for a sure win by a solo attack.
On the last lap with 6 miles to go I attacked on a small roller and got a good gap. The two riders worked well together for about 4 miles, but fortunately were not making any progress in reeling me in. With about 2 miles to go I knew my attacked had worked, and soon enough I crossed the line first with probably a minute gap to the other two riders.

It turned out to be a great day of nice weather compared to Saturday, and a day full of good results for Furman Cycling as we had strong finishes in both the men's A and B races.

Georgia Tech Race Weekend (ITT, 2 RR's

REPORT FROM NEWNAN, GA

ITT

TODD 2ND PLACE- 16 SECONDS OFF THE TOP SPOT

SEAN 9TH PLACE

WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. NEAR FREEZING TEMPERATURES WITH HORIZONTAL SNOW BEING BLOWN IN OUR FACES AND BLOWING POOR SEAN ALL OVER THE ROAD. ITS A GOOD THING THAT IM A FATTY, BUT I DID GET JERKED AROUND QUITE A BIT WITH THE 808'S ON FRONT. THE ROAD WERE SOAKING WET, SO THE 7.7 MILES WAS WET, SNOWING, COLD, AND I HAVE SOME SWEET PICS OF ICICLES FORMING OFF MY AERO TT SEAT POST AND SEAT STAYS. OUR START TIMES WERE AROUND 9:40 AM, AND AROUND 9:20 THE SUN WAS OUT, AND AROUND 10:10 AM THE SUN WAS BACK OUT. THE SNOW AND ICE WAS BASICALLY JUST FOR US. SO NICE.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

RR-SHORTENED TO 3 WUSSY LAPS BECAUSE OF COLDNESS
TODD-8TH I THINK, 2ND BY HALF WHEEL IN THE FIELD SPRINT UP A HILL

SEAN-DNF-MECHANICAL ISH WITH REAR DERAILEUR, HE'LL BE BACK TOMORROW

WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE BETTER, SUNNY, BUT STILL SUPER WINDY AND COLD. AN EARLY BREAK CONTAINING MYSELF AND FEW OTHER GUYS GOT AWAY, BUT PULLED BACK AFTER A BIT, THEN ANOTHER BREAK GOT AWAY, AND AFTER UGA, CLEMSON, AND UF ALL PUT THERE GUYS IN THE BREAK, THEY CAME TO THE FRONT AND BLOCKED FOR THE REST OF THE TIME.

I TRIED TO BRIDGE UP WHILE IT WAS STILL WITHIN REACH BUT THEN HIT THE HEAD WIND AND WITHOUT ANYONE IN THE PACK TO HELP ME I SURRENDERED TO THE PACK. NOONE WAS WILLING TO WORK TO BRING THEM BACK BECAUSE THEY ALL HAD TWO GUYS EACH IN THE BREAK. SO I RESIGNED MYSELF TO GETTING A GOOD WORKOUT ON THE FRONT FOR MOST OF THE TIME JUST PULLING AND PULLING AND PULLING.
IT WAS PRETTY FRUSTRATING. WITH A FEW MILES TO GO, I DUCKED OUT OF THE WIND, AFTER SEEING THAT THE BREAK WAS NOT GOING TO BE PULLED BACK, AND GOT IN A GOOD POSITION FOR THE UPHILL FINISH. I MANAGED TO AVOID SOME SKETCHY MOVES FROM SOME GUYS AND GRABBED A FEW GOOD WHEELS, THEN SPRINTED UP THE HILL FOR 2ND PLACE IN THE FIELD. I AM NOT SURE HOW MANY GUYS WERE IN THE BREAK, WE CAUGHT A FEW OF THE STRAGLERS AS WE SPED UP. SO I GOT TOP TEN, MAYBE 7,8? WHO KNOWS?...CAROL KNOWS! SHE'S BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER! BUT HER CAMERA STILL DOESNT WORK...GO FIGURE.
HOPE EVERYONE AT RIVER FALLS DID WELL. I KNOW ITS WINDY THERE ALSO. WE WILL HOPEFULLY SEE SOME OF YOU GUYS TONIGHT. WE NEED IT FOR THE ROAD RACE! LEES MCRAE IS NOT HERE! SO CHRIS AND SPENCER WILL TAKE ONE AND TWO NO DOUBT. THE MEN'S A FIELD LOOKED PRETTY WEAK WITH JUST A FEW OF THOSE AEROSPACE GUYS FROM UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA. (SORRY IF ANYONE FROM FLORIDA IS READING THIS ON THE BLOG)

ITS BEEN GREAT TO HAVE MY GIRL SALLY HERE, AND MY MOM, DAD, SISTER IN ATL AND HER BOYFRIEND AARON BE HERE TOO. SEAN'S MOM AND SISTER EMILY ARE HERE AS WELL. WE DIDNT NEED THEM FOR A FEED ON THE 3 LAP RACE (WUSSY AND PUNY I KNOW, NOT MY CHOICE) BUT THEY WERE GREAT SUPPORT AND SALLY GOT SOME GOOD PICS!

ADIOS FROM DAY 1.

Alright so here we are again with another entry...

Craig, Sean, and I traveled to NC State this past weekend for a race. We took the trailer and gave it a good workout. NC State is not in our conference, so we raced the category races (Cat 3-4) instead of collegiate races. Spencer Beamer was also there with his pro team DLP Texas Instruments. The weather was nice, the drive was long, and the racing was ferocious.

Results:
Saturday RR
Sean: crash 0.2 miles into race (sad sad sad)
Craig: Top 15
Todd: 8th

Sunday Crit
Sean: did a nice job fixing my flat tire before the race
Craig: pack finish (Top 15 probably)
Todd: I've seen better days (got in a good workout)
Spencer: 2nd place

Spencer was in a breakaway with teammate Thad, then Thad decided to go it alone and gapped back all the way around the crit course to the main group. From there is was smooth sailing for him, sitting in 1 entire lap ahead of everyone. DLP headed to the front and brought the race back all together, while protecting Thad for the win.  Spencer won the bunch sprint, as he came frickin' flying around the last left turn for the slight uphill finish. He won the sprint, but it was for 2nd place because Thad had a lap up on everyone.  It was awesome!

All in all we had a great weekend. The season is still early and this weekend let us get a check on our fitness and legs.

Next up, some of us will be racing at UGA on March 1-2, 2008.  It's gonna be a Individual Time Trial (ITT), a Road Race (RR), and a Criterium Race (crit).

Stay tuned...(sorry I'm not good at blogging)

Recent News

Ok, so we haven't had much on this blog since last season, which makes sense...kinda.

Right now we are all training like crazy. We have gotten a lot of support from Furman administration, as well as sponsorships from local businesses in Greenville. With a bike sponsorship from Specialized, and sweet new argyle kits made by Hincapie Sportswear, we are set up to do very well this season.

Addition to our team:

Sean Kettring (Louisville, KT)- FRESHMAN (Cat-4)
Dave Hutton (somewhere in USA maybe)- JUNIOR, kinda (Cat-1, definetly)

New teams some of our guys are on:
Spencer Beamer-DLP, Texas Instruments Pro Cycling Team
Chris Butler-Hincapie Development Team-Plat A'det
Dave Hutton-Hincapie Development Team-Plat A'det
Ashley Anderson-Team with a training camp in Texas next week

In the words of Glenn Thrift, our new Team Dad and Directorate Sportiff, "Dem boys are for real...they are going to win Nationals"

Take that for what its worth, and we are going to take it one race at a time, one mile at a time, one pedal stroke at a time.

Keep it locked here to check out our progress once we get racing.

Race Report: SECCC Championships

Congratulations to Furman Cycling for their impressive victory this weekend to secure the conference championship in their first year in a close finish with Cumberland.

The first event Saturday was the road race: 75 miles for the guys and 57 miles for the ladies. It was a generally flat course with a few small rollers and only one larger climb of less than 5 minutes. The racing was intense, here are the results:

Spencer Beamer - 5th Men's A
Chris Butler - 9th Men's A
Craig McKinney - 19th Men's A
Kit Hunter - DNF
William Cunningham - 25th Men's A
Ashley Anderson - 5th Women's A

After the road race the team got to relax for a couple of hourse before the team time trial. It was an 11.4 mile course that is supposed to be similar to Nationals. Spencer, Chris, Kit, and Craig made up the team which posted a time of 24:26.73. Unfortunetly this was only good enough for 4th, with Cumberland getting 3rd.

The weekend climaxed on Sunday with a criterium in the parking lot of LP Field, the home of the Tennessee Titans. It was a perfectly flat .7 mile course with 6 turns that was not the best course for the team. We prevailed regardless with Ashley finishing 4th and Chris finishing 12th.

This was enough to get Furman the Southeastern Conference Team Omnium Title for Division II, and this is only the first year! We look forward to training in these next two and a half weeks and putting up a good showing at Nationals. Here is the final points totals:

Overall:
Furman - 1765
Cumberland - 1470
Venderbilt - 1284

A's Only:
Furman - 1531
Cumberland - 1470
Vanderbilt - 372

The team would like to thank the Hunter family for giving us a plae to stay this past weekend, their support at races, as well as their generosity with food. Thank you so much.

Preparing for SECCC Championships

Friday the team team departs for Nashville, TN to finish the regular season and tackle the Conferene Championships. All 6 riders going will be racing in the A races in an attempt to qualify for Nationals. Here is the schedule of events:

Sunday:
11:10 am - Women's A Criterium (55 minutes + 3 laps)
12:15 pm - Men's A Criterium (65 minutes + 3 laps)

Should be a fun weekend! That being said, the new points totals as of Lees-McRae have just been posted and things are looking good for Furman.

Overall Division II:
Furman - 1295
Cumberland - 1018
Vanderbilt - 896

A's Only:
Furman - 1061
Cumberland- 1018

Furman is sitting in a good position to win conference, especially considering that the road race and criterium are worth double points! Have at it Furman!

Race Report: Lees-McRae

This past weekend the Furman Cycling Team travelled to Banner Elk, NC to take on the worst that Lees-McRae could muster. We were only able to get four guys to go (Spencer, Chris, Kit, and William), but that didn't limit our competitive edge, as all four competed in Men's A. This was the first time that the team got to use our new trailer, generously provdided by our sponsor West Coast Tomato. It was an amazing help as it would have been tough to transport all of our gear and 7 bikes.

Saturday morning was an early one, up at 5:45am for our 9:00am TTT. After a nervous trip to the start where we thought we were lost on several occasions, we made it. The weather was in the lower 40's and the course was a tough one: nearly 14 miles with rolling hills and a finish on top of Grandfather Mountain. Despite all of this Furman prevailed, winning the TTT by nearly 30 seconds!

The guys had some time to kill before the crit at 4:30pm, so we went to Subway then back to the bungalow to chill. The crit was a tiny course with a steep little hill before the finish. Here are the results:

Spencer Beamer: 3rd
Chris Butler 10th
Kit Hunter: DNF
William Cunningham: DNF

The guys relaxed that night, eating whatever was laying around at the room. That night thunderstorms rolled in early in the morning, painting an ominous picture for the road race.

The road race started at 9:00am and boasted 1500 feet of climbing per 10 mile loop. We were doing 6 laps! It was cold yet again, and the roads were very wet with the rain from earlier. There was a bit of fog that rolled in during the race, joined by rain. The course was a challenging one, with a moderate climb at the beginning followed by a steep sketchy descent. That was followed by a very steep uphill, a false flat, and then a long 1.5 - 2 mile climb before finally dropping down a very fast descent into Banner Elk. Here are the results:

Chris Butler: 2nd
Spencer Beamer: DNF
Kit Hunter: DNF
William Cunningham: DNF

It was a cold rain that said wished us off as we drove out of Banner Elk comfortable with the gains we had made on Cumberland.

New Points Total

The new points totals have been released finally, and they include the latest weekend of racing at FSU, which Furman didn't attend. Here they are for Division II schools and individuals:

Overall:
1. Furman - 1083
2. Vanderbilt - 791
3. Cumberland - 686

A's Only:
1. Furman - 849
2. Cumberland - 686
3. Vanderbilt - 300

Men's A:
1. Spencer Beamer - 396
(the next guy has 391)

Women's A:
6. Ashley Anderson - 326
(leader has 449)

Men's B:
22. Kit Hunter - 60

55. William Cunningham - 1
(leader has 239)

Men's C:

Keep in mind that as long as Furman can maintain one of the first two positions, then the team will qualify for Nationals. With the overwhelming sucess, however, we are looking at winning conference in our first year!

Race Report: UGA

So we had a great time down in Athens, GA last weekend. The team did fantastic. We arrived in Athens, checked into our hotel (Bestwestern) and went and rode the course, or atleast tried to... When we got to the course we ran into some other guys that said they knew the course and started to follow them, but after the first turn we decided they didn't know the course (which they did) and we ended up riding around for and hour or so. That night we went downtown and ate at a little Italian restaurant which was quite good.

Saturday was race day! And it started off with a 15 mile ITT with cold temperatures and a fierce wind that was in your face at the start and finish. All in all it wasn't too bad, but it could have been warmer. Here is how the team did:

Spencer Beamer: 14th Men's A
Chris Butler: 8th Men's A
Craig McKinney: 8th Men's B
Kit Hunter: 3rd Men's B
Ashley Anderson: 1st Women's A
Todd McClure: 2nd Men's C
William Cunningham: 1st Men's C

Later that day was the road race. It was the same course as the ITT, just multiple laps. Men's C did 2, Men's B and Women's A did 3, and Men's A did 5. It was still windy, but it was warmer. It was a great race for everyone:

Spencer Beamer: 1st Men's A
Chris Butler: 8th Men's A
Craig McKinney: 12th Men's B
Kit Hunter: Pack Finish
Ashley Anderson: 8th Women's A
Todd McClure: 11th Men's C
William Cunningham: 10th Men's C

It was a late day that was capped off by a trip to The Grit.

The next morning was an early one. The team (by now numbering only 6, since Craig had to leave early; we were all 6 people and 8 bikes in one hotel room) awoke at 5:30am for the 7:30 start of the Men's C criterium. Luckily it was only a short drive to the UGA campus where the crit was. 7:30 came and it was still dark (and 38 degrees F) so the organizers decided to push the start back to 8:00. This helped a little since we got to warm up a bit. The criteriums went one right after the other on a pretty sketchy course that weaved by dumpesters, included two short little hills with a downhill and 160 degree turn between them. Here are the results:

Spencer Beamer: 1st Men's A
Chris Butler: 8th Men's A
Kit Hunter: Pack Finish
Ashley Anderson: 4th Women's A
Todd McClure: 1st Men's C
William Cunningham: 2nd Men's C

The team was done kicking enough butt for one weekend and decided to stop by the Pita Pit and Starbucks on the way home.

*Kit Hunter's results are labeled as 'Pack Finish' because they are not listed on the official SECCC results sheet.
