Race Report: SECCC Championships

Congratulations to Furman Cycling for their impressive victory this weekend to secure the conference championship in their first year in a close finish with Cumberland.

The first event Saturday was the road race: 75 miles for the guys and 57 miles for the ladies. It was a generally flat course with a few small rollers and only one larger climb of less than 5 minutes. The racing was intense, here are the results:

Spencer Beamer - 5th Men's A
Chris Butler - 9th Men's A
Craig McKinney - 19th Men's A
Kit Hunter - DNF
William Cunningham - 25th Men's A
Ashley Anderson - 5th Women's A

After the road race the team got to relax for a couple of hourse before the team time trial. It was an 11.4 mile course that is supposed to be similar to Nationals. Spencer, Chris, Kit, and Craig made up the team which posted a time of 24:26.73. Unfortunetly this was only good enough for 4th, with Cumberland getting 3rd.

The weekend climaxed on Sunday with a criterium in the parking lot of LP Field, the home of the Tennessee Titans. It was a perfectly flat .7 mile course with 6 turns that was not the best course for the team. We prevailed regardless with Ashley finishing 4th and Chris finishing 12th.

This was enough to get Furman the Southeastern Conference Team Omnium Title for Division II, and this is only the first year! We look forward to training in these next two and a half weeks and putting up a good showing at Nationals. Here is the final points totals:

Overall:
Furman - 1765
Cumberland - 1470
Venderbilt - 1284

A's Only:
Furman - 1531
Cumberland - 1470
Vanderbilt - 372

The team would like to thank the Hunter family for giving us a plae to stay this past weekend, their support at races, as well as their generosity with food. Thank you so much.
